Belize - 04/15/2014

Let me just get it out of the way.   No whale sharks today.   Fail.

It was a cool dive,  we had fun.   But Jen was so excited to see the whale sharks that she made her stomach upset.   And then when she didn't see them,  she was so disappointed that her stomach was upset.   So to make a long story short,  we are going to try again on Thursday.  And Jen's stomach is upset.

For those that don't know the story,  whale sharks only appear in one particular place,  and it is only for 3 days following the full moon in March,  April,  and May.   The full moon was on Monday,  so they should be here.   They were here last month.   We're here now.

Our first dive was still pretty cool, as soon as we dropped we could see literally thousands of fish below us.   I don't really have the words to describe it.  Imagine a 4 lane highway packed with fish,  as far as you could see,  at least 200 yards.  And not little fish,  most of them were as big as me.   At first we thought they were sharks they were so big.   And literally packed together in one big swarm.   The dive master later told us that we were only seeing the top of the school of fish,   and it went like that several hundred feet down also.   It was amazing.

I should mention that on the way out,  we had this high speed dive boat and all the snorkelers were following us on this crappy fishing boat.   Several miles out we start to smell smoke;  turns out we blew our engine and we were soon dead in the water.   Read my previous post to see how that can turn out.   So they pile us all into the crappy fishing boat,  18 people in a 15 person boat,  plus our gear,  food,  drinks,  and 2 tanks each.   No problem,  mon.

There was a party boat permanently moored on the reef,  and that is where we had lunch between dives.   Fairly uneventful,  jen and i actually laid in the sun for a bit and burned in like 15 minutes.  We did see a big turtle floating on the surface.

The second dive we again searched for whale sharks to no avail.   We saw some bull sharks,  and a family of dolphins went right past us.   I have seen plenty of dolphins in California,  btw, but they look way cooler under water.   And of course a barracuda was creeping on jen, which she hates worse than sharks.

Back to the hotel,  and jen and i made tropical drinks and sat on the porch and ate doritos.   My idea of living.  Then to dinner,  then to the bar next door.   About halfway through our first drink,  the power went out.   For the entire island.  A local explained that all the Mexicans were there for easter weekend, and they were using up all the power.   Lol.  After about 5 minutes,  you didn't even notice any more and we just keep drinking.

Now, again,  I'm out on the pier with jen, smoking a cigar and writing this.   I can see why people come here and never leave...
